Who can forget Kermit singing the Rainbow Connection from his swamp in Florida – the camera zooming in from above, penetrating the tree line and moving along the water until we see the adorable frog stroking his banjo and dreaming of something more for his life. The opening sequence of the first Muppet feature film soon gives way to an outrageous road trip across America that finishes in the city of dreams, Hollywood.

The Muppets are certainly no strangers to zany adventures. In other Muppet movies Kermit, Fozzie and Gonzo high tail to London in The Great Muppet Caper and the furry friends traverse New York in Muppets Take Manhattan. They toy with space travel in Muppets from Space and waltz down the yellow brick road in The Muppets Wizard of Oz. Those crazy creatures love embarking on wacky and madcap escapades.

On January 12 2012, the Muppets will again grace our screens – the ninth Muppet film to enjoy a general release. Simply named, The Muppets, the film follows their antics as they thwart attempts to destroy their theatre by a ruthless oil baron.

We think all kids should share the Muppets’ enthusiasm for travel and adventure. So to celebrate the muppetilious launch of the new film, quickbeds.com are offering a fantastic road trip competition for a lucky family. Like us on Facebook for your chance to enter and win the ultimate Muppets family road trip holiday to the Gold Coast.

To inspire curious folk, we thought we’d take the opportunity to spotlight some classic Aussie road trips for the whole family to enjoy. We’ve kept the travelling distance to a minimum and the attractions to a maximum. We want to keep the kids engaged from one great attraction to the next. And don’t forget to pack the banjo for, “the lovers, the dreamers and me.”

Try eating this banana
The kids will love being backseat drivers on the 400 kilometres from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour. En route, stop off at the theme parks on the Gold Coast before heading to the most easterly point of Australia, Byron Bay. The walk to the lighthouse is compulsory. Continue heading south along the coast until you hit the perennial favourite – the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour. The kids can cool off at the famed beaches of Coffs.

Experience an Island paradise
In the garden state, pick up the hire car in Hobart and head down to Port Arthur to explore the historic buildings from our colonial past. Once you’ve had your culture fix, head north to the stunning Freycinet Peninsula. Take the path upwards, to view the peninsula from above before heading down and cooling off in the beach at Wineglass Bay. If the kids get restless in the car perhaps play the contrary game.

Great with a capital G
The 243 kilometre coastal stretch from Torquay to Warrnambool in Victoria is one of Australia’s great road trips. Built by soldiers after World War I, the Great Ocean Road offers interesting attractions, beautiful scenery and picturesque bushwalks. Stop for a dip at the family-friendly beach at Lorne, admire the impressive rock structures known as the 12 Apostles and enjoy a stroll through the Otway Ranges.

Don the cape
Tropical North Queensland boasts a fascinating opportunity to experience unique Rainforest ecosystems, gasp at crocs in the wild and enjoy impressive views across the ocean to the Great Barrier Reef. The 140 kilometre drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation takes in the picturesque Mossman Gorge, trendy Port Douglas and the undeniable beauty of the Cape. While on the road, treats are always good between attractions as they keep the kids preoccupied and amused.

NT stands for Now Terrific
Start out in the NT capital, Darwin and head east into the magnificent Kakadu National Park. Once in the park stop off to admire indigenous rock art, appreciate a monsoonal forest walk and enjoy the views from the Mirrai Lookout. Continue the circular drive back to Darwin and explore the beautiful Litchfield Park. This is a road trip for families who appreciate Australia’s natural beauty.

Coast it to Canberra
Skip the expressway and take the coast road south from Sydney to final destination Canberra. The first stop is Kiama where you can celebrate nature’s wonder as it spurts water through the blow hole. Continue down to Bateman’s Bay for a variety of sea-based activities. Once refreshed, head west through picturesque Braidwood and onto our nation’s capital, Canberra. The kids will love exploring science-central Questacon, touring Parliament House and being mesmerised by the replica Dinosaur skeletons at the National Dinosaur Museum.
